Milton EDC Visit | D2 Champions! | Rock of Ages | and more...

EDC Social at MHS MIC

On Thursday, October 22nd, the Milton Economic Development Commission hosted their fall Business Social at the Milton High School Innovation Center. This was an opportunity for Milton business owners to both see the newly constructed Milton High School Innovation Center (MIC) and learn about how the MIC prepares students for college and careers through the use of a variety of tools, materials and applications - traditional and current, while developing skills to identify and solve problems; design and build solutions; and to be collaborators, communicators and creators.

Milton educators, Jon Adams and Ben Sevey, walked the audience through the tools and applications showcasing student learning and work. They fielded numerous questions as business leaders considered how a mutually beneficial partnership could be developed bridging student learning with possible careers in the community of Milton. Jon Adam, MIC teacher, highlighted the importance of students learning from the field while Rich Desouza, from Husky, emphasized the need for students’ to be able to ‘visualize’ careers and how developing skills with applications in industry can help launch them.

The evening concluded with business leaders roaming the space, examining the assortment of tools and impressive student work, sparking many inspirational conversations. Based on the enthusiastic turnout and the clear desire for collaboration, it's evident that the future holds significant promise for developing a strong, mutually beneficial relationship between the Milton High School Innovation Center and our local businesses.

Milton High School Proudly Presents Rock of Ages: Teen Edition

Milton High School Theatre Arts is more than just a club or activity. Our theatre arts program is an annual afterschool “home” for a large group of creative and talented MHS students. The Fall Musical engages students in an almost three month creative process that culminates with three public performances.

This fall, Milton High School is proud to present Rock of Ages: Teen Edition, a high-energy romantic comedy set in the mid-1980s on LA’s legendary Sunset Strip. Featuring music from iconic bands like Poison, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Joan Jett, REO Speedwagon, Styx, and more, this show promises to transport audiences back to the glory days of big hair, bold dreams, and even bigger guitar riffs.

Performances will take place on Friday, November 14th, at 6:30 PM, and Saturday, November 15th, at 1:00 PM and 6:30 PM in the MHS auditorium. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults (cash or check at the door), with advanced tickets available one week before the show.

This production marks the directorial debut of Pete Wyndorf, MHS Creative Media teacher, known for his work on YJTV. Now stepping into the world of theatre arts, Wyndorf brings his creative spark and collaborative spirit to this new leadership role. Reflecting on his experience, Wyndorf said that the most rewarding part has been “building the team (the cast and crew) and just seeing people show up every day. They are courageous and thoughtful. When I’ve doubted myself, I look at the 25 students who have risked their own comfort to put on this production, and I know things are going to be fine.”

Helping students portray an era they never personally experienced has also been an exciting challenge. “You’re limited in the fact that there is only so much that you can show them (during limited rehearsal time),” Wyndorf explained. “You try to get students curious, and then if they care, they can use their own time to look at movies and media from the period. We have spent some time costuming, trying to get the look just right. While Sylvie (Shanks) is too young, Carol (Spradling) and I lived it, and we have some insights, not about L.A. but about the 80’s.”

Among those bringing the story to life is Lilyanne Lavee, a Milton High School junior who stars as Sherrie Christian. Lavee shared that what she’s enjoyed most is “taking the character that was written and making it my own. She is not a stereotypical love-struck girl; she is someone who creates her own path. She has more depth and character in the way I see her.”

Wyndorf is joined by Carol Spradling, returning for her second MHS musical after serving as Music Director for Little Shop of Horrors in 2024. Sylvie Shanks takes on the role of Technical Director, leading set and costume design efforts that will immerse audiences in the rock-and-roll world of 1980s Los Angeles.

The cast and crew have one goal: to fill every seat in the MHS auditorium and deliver an unforgettable set of performances. So, save the date, buy your tickets, spread the word, and join us on November 14th and 15th in the MHS auditorium!

Investigative Biographies at Milton Middle:
Students Bringing Stories to Life

This fall, fifth and sixth grade ELA students at Milton Middle School took storytelling to a whole new level with their Investigative Biographies project. Guided by teachers Michelle Borbas, Missy Barnier, and Katrina Antonovich, students became writers, interviewers, and even mini-documentarians, learning how to capture real stories from real people. The goal? To give students an authentic audience while learning the craft of biography writing. Each class took the unit and ran with it in their own way. Some started by learning the basics of text features through creative lessons (yes, even songs!), while others practiced interviewing with classmates before stepping into the community to meet new people.

Students on Team Eagle traveled to the Arrowhead Senior Center to interview local seniors. In small groups, they each took on a role, interviewer, note-taker, or videographer, learning about the lives and experiences of those interviewed. “It was cool to learn about their jobs and how things were different when they were kids,” one student shared. Another said, “Writing about someone else made me want to do their story justice." Back in the classroom, students transformed those conversations into thoughtful, detailed biographies, learning not just about writing, but about empathy and connection.

At the recent School Board meeting, a few of these students proudly presented their work alongside their teachers, showing just how powerful learning can be when it has a real purpose and audience.

Introducing the New Arts Program at Milton Elementary School

Step into the vibrant world of Milton Elementary's Arts classroom, where creativity and joy abound! The walls are alive with Georgia O’Keeffe prints and colorful ukuleles. Students dance energetically with scarves to Vivaldi’s “Autumn,” their movements mirroring the music's lively tempo. Bobbing their scarves in the air as the notes become short and crisp, their smiles tell the story of a classroom where all students are engaged and learning.

Following the dance, Mrs. Hurley captivates the students by reading The Leaf Thief, a delightful story about a squirrel's quest for fall leaves. As they listen, students eagerly identify shapes and lines in the illustrations, with one excitedly recalling their recent leaf hunt adventure: “I found that very same leaf! I think it’s an oak!” Just last week they had gone on a Leaf Hunt around the MES grounds - finding and identifying leaves that they discovered.

This year, the Arts classroom is a magical space that elementary students rotate through every six days, engaging in enriching lessons with master teacher Stephanie Hurley. With years of classroom experience, Mrs. Hurley has embraced the challenge of creating an Arts program that integrates music, dance, visual arts, and performing arts. Each lesson is thoughtfully designed to incorporate literacy and art. This week the goal is fostering a deeper understanding of patterns in nature.

The Arts program emphasizes perseverance, risk-taking, and the uniqueness of every artistic expression. Mrs. Hurley encourages her students with the inspiring message: “All art, like all of you, is beautiful—that’s what makes this class so special.”

Join us in celebrating this exciting new addition to our school, where creativity blossoms and every student’s artistic journey is cherished. As one student put it, “I love the Arts class - it’s a class that makes me very happy.”
