Back to the Drawing Board

On behalf of the Milton Town School District, I would like to express appreciation for the citizens of Milton for coming out to support our FY27 School Budget. Although the budget failed by a narrow margin, the high turnout demonstrates an engaged electorate who care about the issues.

Throughout the budget process the MTSD Board of Trustees were thoughtful and strategic in trying to bring forward a budget that maintains critical investments for student learning while being mindful of the needs of the community. This included eliminating 8 full time positions and one home to school bus, using $430,000 of the Education Reserve Fund for one time expenses, and applying $300,000 of the FY24 Fund Balance to lower the tax rate.

We want the Milton Town School District to be the very best it can be. We know, strong schools create strong communities; we want to make the Milton community strong and proud.  We have an amazing faculty and staff, a vibrant and talented student body and very supportive family and community partnerships; we are very fortunate.

Over the next month, the Board of Trustees will continue to engage in dialogue with the community. They will continue to be thoughtful and strategic. By mid-April, they will need to approve a proposed budget for a revote. We appreciate your continued engagement and support.

Highlights from Our Schools

Kids Heart Challenge at MES

MES students were introduced to the Kids Heart Challenge (formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart) from the American Heart Association this month. During the kickoff, students learned about how their hearts work and the importance of staying active to keep them healthy. They also got their blood pumping with a variety of fun and engaging games.

A big thank you to our PE teachers, Mrs. Mazzola and Mr. Avoli, for organizing this exciting and educational event for our students!

Hoops, Highlights, and Heart: The Annual 8th Grade vs. Staff Game at MMS!

MMS's favorite tradition of the year: the Annual 8th Grade vs. Staff Basketball Game! The energy in the gym was electric as the bleachers filled with cheering fans, homemade signs, and plenty of school spirit.

This game is always a true highlight of our year—a time for our community to come together, share some laughs, and witness some surprisingly "athletic" moves from the faculty.

A Spectacular Halftime Show

The excitement didn't stop when the whistle blew for halftime! Our very own MMS Cheer Team took to the court for a high-energy performance that brought the house down. Their stunts, spirit, and precision were a major highlight of the event and kept the momentum going for the second half.

The Final Score

While the 8th graders put up a valiant effort with some impressive fast breaks and three-pointers, the Staff pulled off the victory this year! Experience (and perhaps a few strategic timeouts) carried the day, but the real win was the incredible sportsmanship and community building shown by both sides.

A huge thank you to the cheer team, the players, and everyone who cheered from the sidelines.

MHS Band and Chorus Concert

On the evening of March 12th, both the MHS Band and Chorus put on a concert in our auditorium.  It was a wonderful event which showcased both the groups, while also creating space for some smaller ensembles from within the larger groups to perform.

MHS is thrilled about the current trajectory of the music program, under the direction of Jenna Schultz and we look forward to the music and memories that will be made in the 2026-2027 school year and beyond!

March Employees of the Month

MTSD Employees of the month - Nutritional Services

For March, staff were invited to nominate a Nutritional Services Employee of the Month. The following individuals were selected in recognition of their commitment to students, instructional excellence, and positive impact on their school communities.

Penny Crosby — Milton High School

Penny has stepped into her role at the high school with determination, leadership, and heart. As kitchen manager, she has taken on the challenge of navigating new regulations, menu changes, and a new kitchen environment while ensuring students continue to receive healthy, delicious meals every day.

Penny leads with professionalism, kindness, and a commitment to maintaining a safe, welcoming kitchen for staff and students.

Her resilience, strong work ethic, and passion for feeding and caring for the school community make her an invaluable part of the high school team.

Cheryl Lamphere — Milton Middle School
Nutritional Services Personnel

Cheryl is a longtime and deeply valued member of the school community who treats every student like family. Known for her warm smile and positive attitude, she makes sure each student is welcomed by name and that no one leaves the cafeteria hungry.

Cheryl builds strong relationships with students, attends their games and activities to show support, and even volunteers her time for special trips and school events.

She takes pride in her work, mentors coworkers, and consistently goes above and beyond for both students and staff, making her a beloved and trusted presence throughout the school.

Paula Bombard — Milton Elementary School
Nutritional Services Personnel

Paula is known for her kindness, enthusiasm, and ability to build genuine connections with every student she meets. She greets students with a smile, knows many by name, and helps create a welcoming lunch environment where children feel comfortable and supported.

Paula goes above and beyond both inside and outside the cafeteria, supporting students at events and even stepping up to coach middle school girls’ soccer so students could have a season.

A true team player and mentor to colleagues, Paula takes great pride in her work and is admired for her compassion, patience, and dedication to students and staff alike.
